1997 850R T5/manual. High miles (275,000) , and it looks badly modded. $3,300 obo. Pros: It’s red, it’s a wagon, it’s an “R” and it’s manual. Cons: practically everything else. The original steering wheel and airbag are gone, there are gauges screwed to the top of the dash, etc. How finnicky are these things electronically? Could I get a steering wheel/airbag/clockspring from the ‘yard and expect the system to regain functionality?

I think I’ll just keep looking.

I’m sure it’s far more rough than the Craigslist-spec photos let on. I’d have a hard time at $ 2,500.

We had an 850 Turbo, and it was pretty clean and well kept. The electrics made it the last Volvo we ever owned.

I wouldn’t be concerned so much about the mileage, those i5s are tanks and will make to 400k+. I would worry about everything else, though. El ectronics on these aren't the worst, but certainly not the best. Also those dashboards like to dissolve, and every time you need to take it apart it speeds the process greatly.

I was thinking $2-$2500 with as rough as it is. The mileage would be less of a concern if it were unmolested and well kept.

Well, I once owned an S-10 Blazer that was prone to electrical fires (it had three!) so in the words of Clarkson, “how hard can it be?”

The plus to living in the PNW is that the sun only shines for about 3 or 4 months out of the year, so interiors don’t get nearly as baked as they do elsewhere. We had a ‘94 Dodge truck that lived outside year-round at the shop when I lived in Florida. The entire upper third of the dash was gone.

They didn’t sell manual R cars in this country. They did in Canada, however.

What are the mods?

An R Wagon that is running and driving is going to command pretty good money.

The mods look good to me with the exception of the intake, unless you like a lot o f intake noise. It looks like a $3000 car to me.

I’m not noise-averse.

Really? Think this one’s a Canadian transplant?

No, I think it’s been swapped. It’s the m56h which has the better low end gearing (vs the m56l). The 16T turbo is a good unit. And it will get you close to 275hp with the right injectors and tune. And the car will haul ass. Think rolling at 30mph in 2nd gear, foot to the floor and the tires spin. It had the right manifold, the exhaust is not awful.   I had a 1998 v70 T5M that was mechanically very similar. Go drive it. If it's tuned well I bet it will go like stink.

If I was closer I would trade my Subaru for it... I am a glutton of punishment those old 850's dished out. Plus that car has lots of room for improvement
